Hans Christian Andersen’s timeless fairy tale is reimagined through the visionary lens of Yayoi Kusama. In this stunning edition, Kusama’s intricate, hallucinatory drawings from her Love Forever series (2004–2007) bring new emotional depth and surreal intensity to The Little Mermaid, a haunting story of longing, sacrifice, and transformation.

Kusama’s densely patterned line work conjures stormy seas, otherworldly underwater realms, and the mermaid’s yearning for life on land. Her signature motifs—unblinking eyes, swirling tendrils, and abstract profiles—both illustrate and interpret Andersen’s poetic narrative, resulting in a powerful visual and literary experience.

This volume is a collaboration between the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art and Kusama, and marks the first in a series pairing Andersen’s tales with contemporary artists.
